San Juan Island

Ken and I went to his family's cabin on San Juan Island this weekend for a little R&R. Temps are in the 70s and summer has hit the northwest.

The poppies and lavender are going crazy all over the island. Which means, so is the grass. Ken arrived the day before and did most of the heavy lifting on the lawn. I cleaned the overgrown vegetation from the space under the porch, raking a half dozen huge piles of weeds, blackberries, and horsetails. You have to take my word for it, because I didn't collect photographic evidence.

I spent a lot of time outside, watching the tide move and the wildlife come and go. I watched these 3 herons fishing from the comfort of the wooden swing at the cabin.

These 3 deer came down to the tide flats one morning.

They trotted around the mudflat near the water line to the other side of Westcott Bay.

We rode Ken's motorcycle around the island, stopping at the Pelindaba lavender farm.

On the south end of the island, the mud flats were steaming in the noon sun.

Ken and me on South Beach

Ken really liked this log

We spotted this red fox while we were walking back from the beach... he completely ignored us.

Roche Harbor is a really cute place, with lots of natural beauty, history, and tradition.

We watched "colors" at sunset. They fire a cannon, and the national anthems of the US and Canada are played, along with 'America the Beautiful.' The flags are brought down just as the sun sets.

Someday I hope to come here by boat!!
